16 Hours of Ink: Wild Bill’s Tattoo-a-Thon Returns February 22

by | Feb 12, 2025

Looking for a way to combine your love of tattoos with a good cause? On Saturday, February 22, Wild Bill’s Tattoo in Roseville is hosting its annual Tattoo-a-Thon, a 16-hour ink, artistry, and philanthropy marathon. From 8 a.m. to midnight, thirty tattoo artists will work tirelessly to support the UC Davis Pediatric and Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (PICU/PCICU). Every penny raised—including tips—goes directly to the hospital. So, if you’ve been thinking about getting some fresh ink, this is the perfect excuse to do it for more than just yourself.

Tattoos That Heal More Than Skin

Wild Bill’s Tattoo-a-Thon isn’t your average tattoo event. This isn’t about trendy designs or flashy gimmicks—it’s about making a real difference. Over the past 23 years, Wild Bill’s has raised an impressive $318,500 for the UC Davis Children’s Hospital. The funds have helped support vital research, programs, and equipment for the PICU/PCICU. In fact, Wild Bill’s contributions are so significant that part of the unit is named after the shop.

Michelle Tafoya, senior director of development at the hospital, summed it up perfectly: “Wild Bill and all the tattoo artists that come from near and far every year to support our children’s hospital are amazing.” And she’s not wrong—this event has become a cornerstone of community support in Roseville.

A Marathon of Needles and Nerves

Tattooing for 16 hours straight isn’t for the faint of heart—or hand. The artists at Wild Bill’s know this all too well. “People think tattooing is easy, but it’s not,” says Wild Bill himself. “It’s hard on your eyes, hands, neck, and back.” Yet, year after year, these artists volunteer their time and talent to make this event happen.

The dedication doesn’t stop with the artists. Customers often wait in line for hours to get their tattoos done during the event. Some bring their families along for moral support (or maybe just to hold their hands). It’s not uncommon to see parents who’ve had children treated at UC Davis Children’s Hospital showing up to get inked as a way of giving back.

What You Need to Know Before You Go

If you’re planning to participate in this year’s Tattoo-a-Thon, here are a few tips to make your experience as smooth as possible:

  • Bring Your Design: Bring your tattoo idea on paper to save time and keep things moving. The artists will appreciate it—and so will everyone waiting behind you.
  • Call Ahead: While walk-ins are welcome, scheduling an appointment might save you some waiting time. You can call Wild Bill’s at 916-783-9090.
  • Be Ready for a Crowd: This event draws people from all over, so be prepared for a lively atmosphere.
  • Support Beyond Tattoos: Not ready for permanent ink? Consider purchasing gift certificates or other items from the shop. Every little bit helps.

Wild Bill’s is located at 115 Lincoln Street in Roseville—a spot that has become an institution in the community over its 50-year history.

Why It Matters

The UC Davis PICU/PCICU isn’t just a hospital unit; it’s a lifeline for families facing some of their darkest days. The funds raised through events like the Tattoo-a-Thon go toward life-saving equipment and groundbreaking research that can make all the difference for critically ill children.

For many participants, this event is deeply personal. Some have children who’ve been treated at UC Davis; others simply want to give back to their community in a meaningful way. As one artist said, “Any monetary compensation could not be better than knowing we’re helping kids.”
